Domaine Jean Grivot
Burgundy
Côte de Nuits
Domaine Jean Grivot’s history dates back to the French Revolution, when the Grivot family moved from the Jura to Vosne-Romanée, although their origins trace back to Italy’s Val d’Aosta. Jean Grivot took over after his father’s death in 1955, and since 1959, all the domaine’s wines have been estate-bottled. Since then, the domaine has gained an exceptional reputation for both the quality of its wines and the transparency of the respective terroirs.
In 1982, Jean’s son Étienne joined him after completing his formal studies in œnologie in Beaune and gaining experience both in France and California. Gradually, responsibilities were transferred to Étienne, and by 1987, he was in charge of both the vineyards and the cellars.
The domaine is currently going through an exciting phase as responsibility transfers from Étienne to his talented, educated, and passionate daughter Mathilde, who brings a fresh approach to this fine domaine while honoring the long-standing traditions of the Grivot family. The process of generational change at Domaine Grivot has been extremely smooth and successful. The winery and cellars have recently completed a massive reconstruction, bringing them up to modern standards.
Mathilde and Étienne believe in prioritizing quality through meticulous vineyard work throughout the year. The result of this hard work is healthy, ripe fruit, with balanced phenolic and sugar levels, depth of concentration, and flavor. The winemaking technique is a blend of classic and modern practices. The fruit is completely destemmed, followed by 5 to 7 days of pre-fermentation maceration at 12-15 degrees Celsius. After about three weeks, the wines are transferred to casks, with approximately 40% of the barrels being new.
Over the last decade, Domaine Grivot has become one of the top and most consistent names in Vosne-Romanée.
