Niepoort
Portugal
Niepoort was established in 1842 by Dutch immigrant Francisco van der Niepoort, who settled in Portugal and began producing and distributing Port wines.
The company has remained family-owned for six generations, with Dirk Niepoort, the fifth generation, joining in 1987. Under Dirk’s leadership, Niepoort expanded its focus to include dry wines, acquiring vineyards in the Douro Valley and other regions such as Dão, Bairrada, and Vinho Verde. This strategic expansion has solidified Niepoort’s reputation as a globally recognized brand.
In 2021, Dirk’s son, Daniel Niepoort, assumed the role of head winemaker, becoming the sixth generation to lead the family business. Daniel has been instrumental in continuing the family’s commitment to traditional winemaking practices while embracing innovation. He has been involved in various projects, including the FIO Wines collaboration, which focuses on producing wines from the Dão region.
The Niepoort winemaking team is known for its extensive experience and adherence to Dirk’s philosophy of producing lighter, lower-alcohol wines that emphasize acidity and drinkability over concentration and ripeness. This approach has been central to Niepoort’s success and its ability to craft wines that authentically express the unique terroirs of Portugal.
Today, Niepoort continues to produce a diverse range of wines, including both Port and dry wines, reflecting the family’s dedication to quality and innovation in the Portuguese wine industry.
