Vega Sicilia
Ribera del Duero
The Vega Sicilia wineries are located in Valbuena de Duero, in the province of Valladolid, on an estate made up of a fertile plain that follows the course of the river. The estate spans 250 hectares of vineyards, with 80% planted with the native Tinto Fino variety (also known as Tempranillo de la Ribera), and the rest planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Malbec. The soils are clay-limestone, with brown-grey streaks, and there is also an alluvial area.
Único is the flagship wine of Vega Sicilia, although it shares its special character with the rest of the wines from the estate. It comes from the older vines on the property and is made with a blend of Tempranillo and a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon than Merlot. Despite its age, this red wine maintains its liveliness due to its good acidity, balanced by a solid alcohol content. It has an intense, ripe cherry color, with the vibrant edge of a wine that is always at its best. The aroma is dominated by hints of roast from the wood, with touches of hazelnut from its oxidative evolution during its years in oak casks. It has generous flavors of old but clean wood, with dry tannins that are pleasantly embittered by the oak, alongside a light sweetness from its alcohol. This is a pedigree wine with a long, lasting finish.
